Archery World Cup: Deepika, Rimil & Laishram won gold medal to make India proud again

Indian women recurve archery team consisting of Deepika Kumari, Rimil Buriuly and Laishram Bombayla Devi has made India proud once again. They won the gold medal in the World Cup in Wroclaw. In fact, it is their second successive gold after Medellin meet.

Actually, the Indian women’s team hammered the top seeded Koreans to win the medal. Overall, the Indian team scored 219 points in the final, which is four points more than the Koreans who managed to score 215. Amazingly, at one point of time the match was equally poised as both the teams scored 163-163 by end three. It cannot be ignored that windy conditions compelled the archers to change their strategy.

Remarkably, it is a huge achievement for the Indian team as they trounced Ki Bo Bae, Yun Ok-Hee and Joo Hyun Jung in the finals, who had never scored below 222 points in the tournament along with a convincing victories over the United States, Russia and Italy to crash into the final. Moreover, this Indian combo of Deepika, Bombayala and Rimil had won the World Cup Stage 3 at Medellin in Colombia last month.

On the other side, the Danish women won the bronze medal by overpowering the challenging team of Russia by 210-194. It has emerged that the World Cup Finals is scheduled to take place in Paris next month. Deepika Kumari finished inside top seven in the singles event too to qualify for the World Cup Finals which is supposed to be held on 21st and 22nd September. To be precise, Deepika qualified for the Finals for second year in a row. Deepika had returned with a silver medal in her maiden appearance in Tokyo last year.

Based on their rankings following four stages of the World Cup, the apex seven archers in men's and women's category marched into the Finals, while the host country (France) got a quota berth.
