Brazil won over Uruguay by 2-1 to march into the Confederations Cup final

Brazil won over Uruguay by 2-1 goals in the Confederations Cup semifinal. With this victory, the hosts took another giant step towards recovering their once famous invincibility. Paulinho scored with a late header to seal their victory against the visitors.

The result of Wednesday match declared Brazil's fifth win in five games which implied that they will lock horns either with Spain or Italy in Sunday's final at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. The European duo is supposed to meet in Fortaleza on Thursday.

Amazingly, both the teams admitted that the decisive moment of the match appeared in the 13th minute when Chelsea defender David Luiz grappled down Uruguay captain Diego Lugano to the ground. Miraculously, Diego Forlan's weak penalty was carefully saved by Julio Cesar, who dived at his left to turn it round the post.

Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez commented that more than having an effect on his team, it had an enormous effect on the rival. They had been proved as the second best until then and as of that moment they grew.

In fact, Brazil continued to take the lead in the 40th minute when Neymar bolted onto a long ball from Paulinho and his deflected shot reached Fred who bundled the ball home from just inside the six-yard box. However, it took Uruguay only three minutes of the second half to draw level. Truly, the Brazilian defense repeatedly failed to clear the ball. When Thiago Silva's weak pass struck Cavani, he avoided mistake with an angled drive.

Notably, the second half unfolded few good opportunities and Paulinho was in the thick of the action again. During the remaining four minutes, the Corinthians midfielder rose at the back post to proceed home a Neymar corner to seal victory. Uruguay threw everyone forward remarkably in the closing minutes but they could not find an equalizer.

Apparently, both sides looked nervous and tense for throughout the contest. Frankly, neither was able to string many passes together. This pattern repeated throughout the match marked by a lack of fluid play or individual brilliance.

Particularly, Uruguay's front three of Luis Suarez, Forlan and Cavani failed to control Brazil's back line. On the other hand, Neymar was a shadow of the player who won the man of the match award in his last three games.

It cannot be ignored that the victory was Brazil's fourth in four games at this year's tournament and of course their fifth in a row under Luiz Felipe Scolari--a run that contradicts their lowest 22nd place in the FIFA rankings. It has also extended their unbeaten run over their South American opponents to eight games dating back to July 2001.

Brazil coach Scolari highlighted that the team had practiced thousands of dead ball situations and that scoring a goal from a corner proves that hard work pays off. He asserted that if one keeps plugging away, something good will happen and that happened today. He added that four wins in four games is crucial and they are on the right track.
