Mamata announces jobs for kin of Ankit Keshri, Masadur Rahman

Kolkata, May 7 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced jobs for the brother of deceased Bengal cricketer Ankit Keshri and the widow of double leg-amputee swimmer Masudur Rahman Baidya.

"We have lost a young cricketer in Ankit Keshri and a famous swimmer in Masadur Rahman. We have decided that within a day or two, we will give a job to Masadur's wife and Ankit's brother," Banerjee said during a government programme in Namkhana in South 24 Parganas district.

"All the formalities are almost complete and we will hand over the jobs to them shortly," she said.

Keshri, 20, a former Bengal Under-19 captain, sustained injuries while fielding on April 17 during a Cricket Association of Bengal senior knockout match and passed away on April 20 after a massive heart attack.

Keshri's father who runs a tea stall in the city had said they will urge the chief minister for a job to the cricketer's brother.

Masadur, who created a sensation by crossing the English Channel 18 years ago, died on April 26 in a city hospital after multiple organ failure.

Masadur had become the first male double-amputee below the knee to cross the English Channel in 1997, a feat that got him worldwide attention and he virtually became a hero in this part of the world.

Later, he conquered the Strait of Gibraltar in 2001 and the Palk Strait in July 2010.
