An Untamed Journey of the Prince

Since the reign of Kapil Dev and winning the 1983 ICC World Cup, India have been through many leadership, but the man that changed the face of Indian cricket by introducing an aggressive approach and a destructive batting strategy, Sourav Ganguly is one of the most successful Indian captain that the nation witnessed alongside M.S Dhoni and Kapil Dev. Under the captaincy of Ganguly, Indian team sailed to several victories, notable among which the Natwest series in 2000, and the 2003 World cup finals.

Hailing from Kolkata, Sourav Ganguly was commonly called by his Bengali fans as ‘Dada’ and ‘Prince of Kolkata’. From being interested in Football as a child to scoring a ton in his debut, ‘The God of off-side’ embarked into a legacy of his own along with the entire nation. ‘Dada’ became the captain for the Indian national team in the year 2000, when the ‘God of Cricket’, Sachin Tendulkar resigned from the captaincy opening a road for the then vice-captain Ganguly to fill in the gap. At that time the Indian team was in deep trouble with the ongoing match-fixing scandal, but Ganguly paved the way for a better team and collective efforts to take the team out of a sinking situation.

After marrying Dona Roy in a much talked about ceremony garnering its popularity on the family feud the two families shared, Sourav Ganguly started on a progressive journey that produced the path for his captaincy. The celebrations made by Ganguly after India won the Natwest series against England at the Lords Cricket Ground and a direct unnerving reply to Andrew Flintoff, is still remembered and cheered by Indian fans. He went on contribute for the newly rising T20 cricket as well, representing India in T20 Champions Trophy and later playing and advising Kolkata Knight Riders, Pune Warriors and Delhi Capitals, respectively, in the Indian Premiere League.

With 11,363 runs in 311 ODIs; 7212 runs in 113 matches at an average of 42.17 in Test matches; and 22 centuries and 72 half-centuries in the limited-overs format in his 12-years long career, Sourav Ganguly have been a rebel on and off the field to introduce Indian cricket team to a new modernized cricket. Initiating lethal gameplay in both batting and bowling ‘Dada’ paved the path for a better tomorrow in the Indian cricket scenario, and still contributes his knowledge and experience to the game as he turns 47 today.
