Aussies Facing their Asian Nemesis

In the first half of the innings, Indian batsmen put on quite a show, and later the bowlers restricting the 5-time World Cup Champions, Australia, 36 runs shorts of their 3rd consecutive victory. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were steadily scoring despite Australia’s bowling attacks led by Mitchell Starc who in his previous game guided Aussies to a victory with his 5-wicket haul against the Windies. Shikhar Dhawan (117 out; 109b; 16X4) was at his best, despite his thumb injury he batted most of the innings striking all over the ground, along with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. As Rohit Sharma (57 out; 70b; 3X4, 1X6) got out after a partnership by the openers of 127 runs, Australia was hoping to put some pressure on the Indian side, but the partnership between Kohli and Dhawan were taking the game only further and slowly putting a lethal target on board. Shikhar Dhawan contributed 117 runs from 109 balls, and after his departure Virat Kohli (82 out; 77b; 4X4, 2X6) took the mantle from Dhawan, while Hardik Pandya (48 out; 27b; 4X4, 3X6) at no.4, and Dhoni (27 out; 14b; 3X4, 1X6) and K.L Rahul (11 not out; 3b; 1X4, 1X6) contributed with cameos to secure a target of 352 with the loss of 5 wickets at the end of 50 overs.

From the start of the 2nd innings, Australia was struggling to score singles and 2’s let alone boundaries. The opening batsmen Captain Aaron Finch (36 out; 35b; 3X4, 1X6) and David Warner (56 out; 84b; 5X4) were unable to get the momentum to get started and consuming too many deliveries to add little to scoreboard. Finch gets run out at the start of 14th over and Ushman Khawaja was sent to add some quick runs but Warner failed to cooperate and departs in a while. Australia was finding it difficult to keep a partnership and keep the scoreboard ticking at the same time. Steve Smith (69 out; 70b; 5X4, 1X6) was unable leak some runs out of the Indian bowlers as well. Amidst the fierce bowling of Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneswar Kumar stole the show, with his 3 wickets, and 5.0 economy rate, keeping Australia under pressure, and not letting many runs lose. Ushman Khawaja (42 out; 39b; 4X4, 1X6), Glenn Maxwell (28 out; 14b; 5X4) and Alex Carey (55 not out; 35b;5X4, 1X6) were the only batsmen in the Australian squad who were keeping the fight alive, while the rest were steadily restraining or succumbing to India’s bowling attacks. Keeper Alex Carey was the only batsmen at the last 5 overs of the innings, giving the Indian bowlers run for their money with his boundaries and one six, but with no help from the non-striker’s end, Australia fell 36 runs short losing all their wickets in the 50 overs duration.
