Australian Open: Robson shocks Kvitova with sensational win

Briton teen sensation Laura Robson might have never dreamt even in her wildest dreams that she will be someone in the reckoning to breeze past a top player on her quest for Australian Open 2013 title. Beating sweltering Melbourne summer heat, it was Robson all the way with former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova left reeling under pressure. The 18-year-old Brit has described her win over Czechie as one of the biggest career wins so far.

Robson defeated the World No 8 2-6 6-3 11-9 in a historic third set that left the spectators amazed to the core. Fans of both the players were onto the toes while the third set played hide and seek with both the players. So mesmerizing the win was for the Australian born was that she even went on to compare it with that of her last year US Open wins against Li Na of China and Kim Clijsters of Belgium, the two other top circuit players who won Grand Slam events before.

"I think it's right up there with one of the best wins," she said. Robson was clearly thrilled with the outcome of the match.

Robson and Kvitova shared the dubious distinction of making 30 double faults apart from those 92 unforced errors that has dragged the third set to 11-9. There was enough drama throughout the match – some happiness, some anguish, some tension and some anger. Eventually, it was a memorable win for Robson who said that she needs some rest instead of getting onto Twitter for updates.

"You know it's going to be a pretty ugly match when you start off with two double faults," Robson said.

Though it was Kvitova who was displaying her emotions as the match progressed, Robson maintained her calm by concentrating on her game.

"I thought 'I've really got to dig in here', and she's never someone who's going to give you a lot of rhythm because she takes the ball so early.

Playing under hot conditions when the mercury levels were rising was not easy for both the players. It was really tough for Kvitova as she had a hard time to manage.

"I just had to try to get as many balls back as I could, and I was pretty disappointed with myself in how I tried to serve out at 6-5 in the third.

Both the players chipped in with their best, but eventually it is the consistent performance of Robson who maintained her cool throughout that helped her in winning the game.

It was interesting to note that Robson has played her second round of the Australian Open at the Rod Laver Arena before. After stunning the Czech beauty after that marathon match, fans of the Brit teen hopes that she might be up for many more such upsets in the coming days.

Robson even remarked that Kvitova was in such a superb form that it appeared as if was almost incredible for her to take over. However, it was her determination that helped her in breezing past the Czech player.
