Auto GP World Series: Narain Karthikeyan becomes a tough contender of title after the fourth win

Indian driver Narain Karthikeyan staged an implausible fight back up in the order to win race two after having started seventh on the grid in round seven of the Auto GP World Series at Donington Park in Great Britain on Sunday.

After finishing 2nd in the opening race of the weekend following starting on pole, Karthikeyan had begun seventh as per the reversed grid.

An elated Karthikeyan after winning his fourth race of the season remarked that it is certainly the most satisfying victory of the season to win by 13 seconds after starting seventh. It was truly amazing. However, the triumph didn't come easily although as the former Grand Prix driver was squeezed off track on the commencing lap.

Karthikeyan narrated while recounting the dramatic opening moments of the race that he managed a good start but got squeezed onto the grass. However, he kept it flat and passed Sergio Campana. Further, he passed him back on the following lap but hit his front-left so he received some damage to the suspension.

Remarkably, the Indian was the first driver to make his mandatory pitstop and departed the pitlane near the back of the pack. But once in clean air, he set forth a scorching pace that other drivers, including the race leaders failed to match. Then he rapidly climbed up the order as the laps proceeded. Still six laps to go, he hauled the fifth position with all the four, who were ahead of him yet to make their stops. Despite facing some traffic, Karthikeyan went on to set a slew of fastest laps as the leaders began stopping. Ultimately, he took the lead on the final lap and crossed the line in a gigantic 13 seconds ahead of pole-sitter M Van Buuren, clinching the fastest lap of the race to top off the perfect weekend.

Moreover, the 36-year-old had extended his pole streak to four in a row on Saturday, before heading to finish second in the opening race on Sunday morning. Notably, Karthikeyan scored 40 points during the weekend, placing him 21 points behind championship leader Vittorio Ghirelli.

The Auto GP title will go down to the wire at the Brno circuit in Czech Republic along with four drivers in contention for the title, to host the season’s finale on 6th Oct.
