Barcelona lift Spanish Super Cup in Tangier

Barcelona started their season on a high on Sunday, winning the 13th Spanish Super Cup in Tangier, Morocco. This Super Cup was supposed to be the first of its kind. Played overseas in Morocco, RFEF changed the format of the final from a two-legged contest to a one match affair.

Barcelona and Sevilla named strong starting line-ups for the match, making it evident that both the teams would settle for nothing less than a victory. Sevilla drew the first blood as Sarabia scored the opening goal of the match following a quick breakaway. Barcelona looked really menacing on the night, creating chance after chance. However, the breakthrough finally came in the 41st minute. Barcelona was awarded a free kick right outside the box. Messi almost curled it in with his left only to hit the post. The ball bounced off the back of the keeper and hit the post again to fall for Pique who calmly tucked it home.

Both the teams created goal scoring opportunities in the second half only to put it wide time and again. Barcelona finally took the lead in the 78th minute. OusmaneDembele produced a moment of brilliance from the edge of the box on the right. The Sevilla defence watched in horror as his pile-driver of a shot clipped the inside of the crossbar to find the back of the net. 2-1 to Barca.

Sevilla was awarded a penalty in the dying minutes of the match. TerStegen did well to keep it out as Barcelona went on to lift the Supercopa de Espana. Messi became the most decorated Barcelona player in history (33 major trophies), surpassing Andres Iniesta(32).
