‘Captain Fantastic’ of Indian Football

If Cricket here is a game people worships, the devotion towards Football is undeniable among its mass, as India celebrates each game with equal dedication. Every sport in India brings not just passion and anticipation but an emotional outcome for player as well as fans. Fans fiercely appreciates each game and the players are held in a high pedestal, as they continue to make the countrymen proud on most occasions.

Football over the years have witnessed several player coming out to offer some of their authentic performances in and outside of the home soil and setting a different standard all together for India. Through the years, footballers like, Gostho Pal, Pradip Kumar Banerjee, Chuni Goswami, Bhaichung Bhutiya, and recently Sunil Chhetri all had their shares to collectively contributing to the glory of the nation. ‘Captain Fantastic’ or Sunil Chhetri has been the flagbearer for Indian Cricket for close to a couple of decades now, dedicating his time and potential for the game and for the nation.

Born on 3rd August, 1984, Chetrri is the son of K. B. Chhetri and Sushila Chhetri and had a keen interest towards football from a young age. Football was ingrained in his very genes with his father playing for the Indian Army and her mother and twin sisters playing for Nepal women’s National Team. Even marrying in the family of renowned Mohun Bagan legend, Subrata Bhattacharya’s daughter and longtime girlfriend, Sonam Bhattacharya in 2017 his close-knitted relation with football has deep roots. Debuting for the much renowned club Mohun Bagan in 2002, Chhetri professionally basked into a legacy he possessed. He then went on to contribute for many domestic clubs like, JCT, Dempo, Bangaluru FC and even Mohun Bagan’s arc-rival East Bengal.

When his international career kick-started in 2004, he showed a promising career ahead. As expected, when opted for Neheru Cup in 2007, Indian National Football team lifted the Cup for the first time in 25 years, and have held on to the undefeated record since then. His contributions also led India to the victory in 2011 SAFF Champions Cup in 2011. He took the Indian Football scenario with a storm after scoring twice in Intercontinental Cup last year, tallying his international goal count with Argentina’s star player Lionel Messi, falling just short of Portugal epic, Cristiano Ronaldo.

The ‘Poster Boy’ of the Indian Football, Chhetri has been outstanding on and off the field, even after several international deals not coming off at the end, Chhetri never gave up on hope and gave away hope for the Indian fans to support the team through thick and thin. 6 times AIFF Player of the Year, AFC Asian Icon, Arjuna Award in 2011 and Padma Shri this year, India has honoured his skills on several occasions but can never appreciate him enough for the legacy he still adds to his name at he steps into 35. Chhetri has been nothing short of an inspiration, in a country of billions, where billion dreams might see the light of the day for his generous contribution to Indian Football.
