Everyone in the World watching tonight had hoped that Ronaldo and Messi would rewrite their own World Cup script afresh and give football fans a last battle of titans in the quarter finals in Nizhny Novgorod next weekend. However, fate had different plans. Instead of Portugal and Argentina, Uruguay and France prevailed tonight. By the time the next World Cup starts, Messi will be 35 while Ronaldo will be 37. Is this the beginning of the end of a decade of dominance by Ronaldo and Messi? Moreover, it was a night both superstars exited from this year’s World Cup. Did the baton pass on the likes of Kylian Mbappe? We will see.

Ronaldo went into the game straight away with excellent stopovers and then shot at the Uruguay goal from distance which drew a save from the goalkeeper. But on the 7th minute, Cavani drilled a ball to the left to Suarez who crossed it back to Cavani who made an excellent run to the Portugal box. Cavani hung in the air with a jump and headed excellently to beat Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio.
Ronaldo rallied his side and tried to get a goal but Uruguay and Diego Godin defended excellently to deny Portugal time and again from open play. However, 10 minutes after half time, Portugal found a goal through a header from Pepe. Five minutes later though, Uruguay attacked and fed the ball to Cavani, who opened up his body and deftly curled the ball beyond the reach of Rui Patricio into the back of the net.

Portugal got a chance to equalize again, when Uruguayan goalkeeper Muslera came off his line to save a cross but spilled the ball. However, Bernardo Silva shot blazed his shot over the bar and Uruguay breathed a sigh of relief. The equalizer never came for Portugal.
