David Silva quits national team

Manchester City star David Silva announced retirement from his national squad, Spain, in a long letter published on social media. He is the third one to retire from the national team in the recent months, after his much talented teammates, Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique stepped down.

It is not easy, after everything I experienced, to sit down and write this letter,” he expressed on Twitter. “The national team has given me everything and has allowed me to grow as a player and as a person from my first days in the youth set-up.” The 32- year old was a part of the La Roja’s World Cup winning performance in 2010 and was also an integral part of the 2008 and 2012 European Championship triumphs. Silva was a part of the squad for 12 long years and scored 35 goals for his country in 125 games.

Silva stated that he was very proud of being a part of a team like Spain, adding “I lived and dreamed with team that will forever be remembered.

The disappointment of the Spanish fans was quite apparent all over social media, as they were just coping with Pique’s announcement on Saturday and this came as a major blow to most of them. A lot of fans and Silva’s teammates were supportive of his decision, with Benjamin Mendy being the first one to react to his post.
