Did Sharapova celebrate too much for defeating Venus?

Maria Sharapova won over Venus Williams in a much anticipated match that proved to be a total one-sided affair on the whole. As it was seen that Williams was struggling totally, there was no stopping for Sharapova. As soon as the Russian beauty won the first set 6-1, it was like the fate of the match was already seen already. Meanwhile, there was no rhythm displayed by Williams at all she struggled throughout the game. The only consolation for her was winning four games against Sharapova who was cruising ahead without losing a game so far against her opponents in the Australian Open.

However, there was enough furor in the way Sharapova celebrated against the victory against Williams as if she won the Grand Slam already. It was even more surprising after considering the fact that it is not new for the Russian in defeating aging players on course to win major titles. Ardent tennis fans and even supporters of the celebrity tennis star were in shock more or less after seeing her yell out a loud squeal. She carried on by thrusting her fists and bending on her knees to shout again.

Jon Scott of Tennis.com says the conduct was 'unbecoming a champ."

Though winning the match at such a juncture with 6-1 6-3 and celebrating is justified, it cannot happen at such a high level unless it is a Grand Slam final. People still wonder what the exact reason such an exuberated celebration would be. If one has to compare with that of the similar celebrations by Novak Djokovic during last year’s Australian Open, then all it can be said that the situations in which they were playing are totally different.

Some supporters of Sharapova got onto Twitter explaining that the celebration cannot be misunderstood as she was exulting because of the due respect she gives to a star player like Williams. It has to be remembered that Sharapova has always been in trouble while playing against Venus’ sister Serena Williams. This might be one reason for so much of excitement.

This gives an indication that Sharapova was ecstatic that she got a psychological advantage over Serena that she beat her sister already on course of taking her in case they will be pitted against each other. Ironically, sister Serena continued her good form and made it to the last 16 of Australian Open 2013.

Considering the fact that she had to limp through each and every match played, the efforts and sportsmanship of Serena are extremely laudable. Irrespective of whether she wins or loses in the next game, her fans will always be supportive of her and satisfied with her performance so far. It was evident when Venus Williams issued a brave statement that despite the injury factor, Serena will continue playing.

Venus even responded to the celebration that the Russian was making after the match. She made it clear that beating is no longer an achievement considering the fact that how rapidly the times have been changing. Maria Sharapova will take on Belgian player Kirsten Flipkens in the 4th round match.
