East Bengal Reining into its 100th Year

Football is a game that has gripped fans all over the world in a web of emotion and passion, whether it’s an overwhelming passion for the game or an emotional approach to support a particular side or team. West Bengal have been equally affected by the same passion, with supporters coming in hoards to show their support when a game takes place. The partition of Bengal in 1905, and then finally the partition of India and East-West Pakistan, later on East Pakistan earing freedom in 1971 and becoming Bangladesh, did divide the West and East side, not just geographically, but it also divided the sides on the field with the East part and Bangladeshi’s or ‘Bangals’ supporting East Bengal and the West part and so called natives or ‘Ghotis’ supporting their immediate rival Mohun Bagan AC

No matter, how the partition created a rift between the nations, often engaging in political and social tantrums, East Bengal is still a raging phenomenon inside the now divided Bengal. The ‘Red and Gold Brigade’ emerged into the streets of Kolkata on 28th July, marking the completion of a century of the prestigious club. However, the story which goes back over 100 years, Jorabagan club was scheduled to clash with Mohun Bagan, but defender Sailesh Bose was excluded from the playing XI, which sparked initial controversy and later vice-president of Jorabagan club Suresh Chandra Chaudhuri with others formed the East Bengal club on 1st August 1920

Through thick and thin, and socio-political scenario East Bengal soon became a sensation. As the team steps into its 100th year, fans and members had a distinct celebration to offer. On Sunday, an army of red and gold boasting their designed centenary year jersey, started a rally from Kumartuli to East Bengal club. Despite rain spoiling the mood throughout the day but the spirit of the fans never wavered even for a moment. Dancers, bands and even carrying flags as long as 100 meters long the supporters engaged in the procession with overwhelming enthusiasm, often blocking the traffic, but their celebrations were widely appreciated by the public as well. Former Indian Football Team captain Bhaichung Bhutia and current East Bengal footballer Alvito d’Cunha also were integral part of the event making the day even more memorable. The Mohun Bagan – East Bengal derby matches are still one of the most anticipated matches of any season, and both the teams hold a special emotion and a timeless legacy to admire.
