Enduring the Enduroman Triathlon

Triathlon is considered to be one of the toughest challenges of sports, generally comprising of sprinting, swimming and cycling. However, Enduroman Arch to Arc Triathlon is an ultra-distance triathlon connecting 2 iconic cities. The triathlon commences with a run from London’s Marble Arch to Dover, with next challenge of swimming laid across the English Channel and when the athlete emerges at Calais in France, it is a long way cycling to the finish at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

The time to achieve this whole multi-sports event takes more than 2 days, and on 20th August a milestone set forth by Belgium’s Julien Deneyer achieved the distance in 52 hours and 30 minutes. On 25th August, Mayank Vaid, a 42-years old Indian origin legal executive, completed the race breaking the 5-day old new record, with a whopping 2 hours reduced time, recording 50hours and 24 minutes.

Mayank became the first Asian, belonging from Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh to complete the race and with such an improved time. Participating to test his fitness, Mayank completed the first run of 140km in 16 hours and 35 minutes. Taking a 5 hours break after covering the huge distance on feet, he jumped for the next challenge of swimming in the English Channel. Surviving through the less than 16 degrees of temperature for a prolonged period, he completed the 2nd step by swimming 42.5 km in 12 hours and 48 minutes, including a break for nourishment in the water.

The last task of Cycling, commenced after a 2 hours 20 minutes’ break, Vaid completed the race by paddling 290km to the central district of Paris and the finish line of the event. Working in Louis Vuitton as a legal executive in Hong Kong, Vaid stated that a lot of travelling and eating out was making him obese. Trying to be fitter, he took up a fitness regime and open water swimming and ultra-races, ending up participating in Hong Kong Challenge last year which provided the key to Enduroman Triathlon and a winning finish to it.
