According to an audit and consultancy firm BDO, the 2014 World Cup in Brazil is set to provide a record of $5 billion windfall for FIFA. This statistics indicated 36% increase on the USD 3.655 billion earned at the previous World Cup in South Africa in 2010. In addition, this is 110% more than the USD 2.345 billion received at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
BDO declared that, revenue from television rights and soaring sponsorship demand based on the tournament’s superiority provided the medium for the World Cup’s ascending profitability.
BDO spokesperson Pedro Daniel revealed that the World Cup market is consistently growing and most probably the drift will continue at the following World Cups in Russia (2018) and Qatar (2022). He disclosed that television networks that own the rights to broadcast the occasion pay a huge amount, but it is a very good business due to the money they make from publicity. He estimated that the event will contribute to at least one percent increase in Brazil’s 2014 Gross Domestic Product.
According to FIFA, the prize money for the tournament has also been increased by one third since 2010. The 2014 champions are estimated to take home USD 40 million. Quite a good amount!
