Fighting for Pride

After the clash between India and England on Edgbaston ground, and England winning the match, crushed the little chance Sri Lanka possessed of qualifying in the World Cup semi-finals. While, West Indies, on the other hand, had already lost their chances of further advancement in the tournament with their bantering performance. With no chances whatsoever, these two teams clashed to win for their respective country’s sheer pride and Sri Lanka at the end having a proud moment to look forward to, in the whole of the World Cup tournament, while Windies had their own moment of feeling proud as well.

Openers Dimuth Karunaratne (32 out; 48b; 4X4) and Kusal Perera (64 out; 51b; 8X4) had a great start coming to bat first, while Windies were unable to break the partnership. However, West Indies captain Jason Holder makes a fitting breakthrough by scalping Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne. Aviska Fernando (104 out; 103b; 9X4, 2X6) coming to bat, Sri Lanka was giving a tough fight to the Windies. Fernando’s century along with Kusal Mendis (39 out; 41b; 4X4), Angelo Mathews (26 out; 20b; 2X4, 1X6) and Lahiru Thirimanne (45 not out; 33b; 4X4) contributed little to boost the total up to 338 with the loss of 6 wickets.

Sri Lanka’s bowling led by Lasith Malinga can be dangerous at times, with his prominent toe-crushing yorkers and cutters, which are very much lethal to most of the batsmen. With Chris Gayle (35 out; 48b; 1X4, 2X6) trying to settle down, Malinga dismissed both Ambris and Hope. After Gayle’s dismissal, Shimron Hetmeyer (29 out; 38b; 2X4) and Nicholas Pooran (118 out; 103b; 11X4, 4X6) started a crucial partnership and even after Hetmeyer’s dismissal, Pooran kept clinching on to the hope of winning with his sensible batting while his teammates fell without much contribution. Angelo Mathews restricted the danger man Pooran, but after that, apart from the half-century by Fabian Allen (51 out; 32b; 7X4, 1X6), rest of the team failed to get to the desired target as Sri Lanka retains some glory even after exiting in the group stage.
