Hit and run case: National cycling coach Ruma Chatterjee was killed in a road accident

In a dismal incident, former Indian international cyclist and present chief coach of Cycling Federation of India Ruma Chatterjee was killed in a road accident on Tuesday early morning.

Originally hailing from Kolkata, Ruma was attending a national camp before the Indian team's visit to Switzerland for training. In fact, the four-member squad is supposed to take part in the World Championships in Scotland.

Ruma was hit by a speeding vehicle during a training session with 20 junior members while traveling from New Delhi to Noida. Immediately she was rushed to Kailash hospital where she died during treatment.

It has been reported that the car driver fled from the spot after the accident. Later the cycling team's assistant coach Bhim Singh Dhaiya lodged a complaint with the police.

The 51-year-old spinster was survived by her 77-year-old mother and five sisters. Ruma represented India thrice in international competitions. She has worked as a coach for the national side at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, the Asian Championships and the Asian Games.
