Hurray! India wins splendidly against Fiji with 16-0 at Hockey World League

Entertaining stuff from India as it crushed Fiji 16-0 in a breathtaking manner during their opening match of the men’s Hockey World League Round 2 at the Major Dhyan Chand National stadium here on a chilly Monday night. Perhaps, there was no match between both the teams as the play went on.

It didn’t took too much of time long for the war chants to turn into a whisker as India gone through the Fijian defence in a superb form  Fiji, the lowest ranked team in the tournament at 70, feared the Indians with their apparent war cry Cibi, which is usually related with their popular rugby team.

But soon what appeared to be a war cry turned into a nothing, as India shattered the dreams of Fijians with their speed, power and accuracy.

The scoring spree began in the third minute itself with ace drag-flicker VK Raghunath striking from a penalty corner to give India a 1-0 lead. From there, it was no looking back for India, who slammed in seven goals in the first half.

Everything was in control of the team completely. Fresh from the outburst of the team players during the Indian Hockey League, the same tempo was maintained in a perfect manner. There were no issues at all for the team players in representing their dominant forms against a comparatively low profile team, which is considered on par with minnows.

As many as 10 Indians hit the board in a perfect manner with Raghunath and Danish Mujtaba scoring a hat-trick each. This was an unbelievable stuff from the Indians, which cannot be witnessed so easily again. The zeal to score was so much that it was like scoring a goal with every drop of the hat. The Indian fans were treated to an absolute delight. Probably, it could be the impetus provided by IHL that there was maximum confidence oozing out of the Indian camp that appeared in every goal they have scored.

Drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh and debutant Malak Singh struck a brace while Kothajit Singh, Manpreet Singh, Dharamvir Singh, Nitin Thimmaiah, Chingelensana Singh and another rookie Gurjinder Singh scored goals apiece.

The Fijians were no match for the Indians in any department that has to be considered. The Indian defence was hardly tested and the only action goalkeeper PR Sreejesh faced was when Fiji were awarded their only penalty corner in the dying minutes of the game. Apart from that lone incident, there was nothing much notable from the Fijians. At some point of time, it appeared as if they were spectators and not players.

Nothing was going right for the Fiji players that they have left all the hopes right from the start of the match. Cashing upon the opportunity provided to them, they gained an upperhand with a formidable attack and solid defence. This is the kind of stuff that is expected from India everytime they venture out to play against any time. Hopefully, there will be much more surprises such as this one in the future too.
