IPL 2019 – Match 41: Watson Cruised Chennai to a Triumph

Chennai Super Kings won the toss and chose to bowl first, and benefitted with the early wicket in the 2nd over, of Jonny Bairstow (0 out; 2b), and it seemed like a good start by the home team, Sunrisers Hyderabad at 5-1 after 1.3 overs. However, Hyderabad soon recovered, with David Warner and Manish Pandey took charge of the situation, starting with a partnership. In the next over of Harbhajan Singh, Pandey and Warner each started and finished the over with a six, and after that, there was no stopping them. They put out 54 runs on board in the powerplay alone. Manish Pandey brings up his half-century off just 25 balls at the end of 11th over. And in the very next over David Warner (57 out; 45b; 3X4, 2X6) completes his 50 runs mark and the duo brings up a 100 runs partnership for the third wicket. But Harbhajan Singh was yet to change things around, as, in the mid-14th over, Warner misses the ball, and MS Dhoni, as usual, was quick to stump the wickets and dismisses Warner, SRH at 124/2 after 14 overs. In the 19th over Suresh Raina misses the catch of Manish Pandey, but on the other hand, Vijay Shankar (26 out; 20b; 2X4, 1X6), after a short cameo, also departs at the end of 19th over, SRH at 167-3. Dwayne Bravo bowled a good over in the conceding just 8 runs in it, Sunrisers Hyderabad settling for 175-3, after the 1st innings.

Sunrisers Hyderabad had the desired start they wanted as the first over by Bhuvneshwar Kumar was a maiden one, and the in the 2nd over Chennai Super Kings only scored 2 runs off Khaleel Ahmed, and in the 3rd one trying to take a single, Faf Du Plessis (1 out; 7b) gets run out, terrific fielding by Deepak Hooda and a direct hit resulted in Chennai losing one of its openers, CSK at 3-1 after 2.3 overs. However, Shane Watson and Suresh Raina were taking the hosts closer to the target. At the last over of the powerplay, Suresh Raina (38 out; 24b; 6X4, 1X6) hit 4 boundaries and a six to put 49 runs on board, after the loss of 1 wicket. With the game slowly advancing on Chennai’s side, Sunrisers were desperate to strike a wicket, and Rashid Khan becomes the savior, as he takes the wicket of Raina in the 10th over, to delay the chase for the time being. In the 12th over, Shane Watson brings up his 50 with a massive hit into the stands as CSK needed 74 more from 48 balls to win. Shane Watson (96 out; 53b; 9X4, 6X6) was looking unstoppable taking Chennai closer to another home win, but at the start of 17th over, when Chennai Super Kings needed 14 runs off 18 balls, Bhuvi dismisses Watson, as he edges the ball to Bairstow behind the stumps, concluding his delightful performance, just 4 runs short off century, but was enough to take the team over the victory line. However, as Watson departs SRH was putting up the tough competition, with frequent dot balls coming in. With 8 runs to score from 5 balls, Kedar Jadhav went big, but Manish Pandey put out a brilliant effort on the boundary line, stopping the ball and throwing it in, but slightly mistiming the jump and throw, thus giving six runs to the hosts. As the scores got level Rayadu gets out, edging a ball high and Vijay Shankar taking a simple catch, this could have ended in the up in a Super Over, but in the next ball, Chennai Super Kings gets the job the done with 1 ball to spare.
