Japan Open Super Series: PV Sindhu will lead India's charge in the absence of Saina Nehwal

World No.10 shuttler PV Sindhu will lead India's charge in the absence of Saina Nehwal at the $200,000 Japan Open Super Series badminton that commences in Tokyo on Tuesday.

The World Championship bronze medalist Sindhu, who is seeded eighth, will lock horns with two qualifiers in the first two rounds and is expected to sneak past the quarter-finals where she will most probably clash with World No.1 plus Olympic champion Li Xuerui of China at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Although the Hyderabadi has hammered the Chinese top seed in the past, Xerui is a difficult contender to measure with each time she enters the court.

Tanvi Lad of Mumbai, who is ranked No.77 in the world, will be the only other Indian taking part in the women's singles and she has a first round clash against World No.20 Sayaka Takahashi of Japan.

On the other side, the Indian men's singles competitors have been given a harsh draw. Remarkably, world No.13 Parupalli Kashyap will clash with the agile Sho Sasaki of Japan. Although the Hyderabadi has lost both his matches against the World No.22, the Japanese will face a tough challenge against the rough Indian. In case Kashyap succeeds in overpowering Sasaki for the first time, he will certainly have a tougher challenge against second seed Chen Long of China in the 2nd round.

Meanwhile, World No.20 R.M.V. Gurusaidutt is scheduled to encounter a difficult opener against a higher ranked Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia.

Further, forthcoming talent B. Sai Praneeth will face eighth seed Hu Yun of Hong Kong while Sourabh Verma is supposed to have relatively an easier first round as he will encounter a qualifier.

Ajay Jayaram of Mumbai will lock horns with Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in Round 1. In case he wins the tie, he will take on Thailand's fourth seed Boonsak Ponsana in the pre-quarters.

Above all, the combo of Pranaav Jerry Chopra-Akshay Dewalkar and B. Sumeet Reddy-Manu Attri will be carrying forward the Indian contention in men's doubles.

However, there will be absence of Indian representation in women's as well as mixed doubles in the event.
