Kenya's Kamworor plots Olympics double

Nairobi, March 28 (IANS) World half marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya will have two weeks of rest before returning to training as he expects to dominate at the Shanghai Diamond League meeting on May 14.

Kamworor has selected the Chinese premier track competition to launch his season, reports Xinhua.

With eyes set on the Olympics, the World Cross Country champion will compete at the 5,000 metre distance to test his speed and preparation plans for the season.

"It is true I will go to Shanghai. It is the right place to gauge the fitness level of a body. Track competition is different from the road races and I will be there to see how good and fast my legs can carry me," he said here on Monday.

After puncturing the aura of invincibility around Olympic and world 10,000m champion Mo Farah in Cardiff, Kamworor is now relishing the prospect of doubling up at the Rio Olympics in August.

"I have always wanted to see how I can hold on to the pressure and challenge of competing in two events in one championship," he said.

Indeed, the decision to double will first have to be cleared by the coaches. Then he will face the challenge to race against his rivals Paul Tanui, the Olympic bronze medallists in 10,000m, Leonard Barsoton, the Africa champion in 5,000m, Bedan Karoki, second at the World Half Marathon, Isaiah Kiplangat, Edwin Soi, Caleb Mwangangi and a horde of other stars.

"I think I am strong enough to do that," said Kamworor, who will start his Diamond League season in Shanghai on May 14 with the 5,000m race.
