After several exceptional boxing performances in almost two decades, the Manipuri boxer had made India proud on plenty occasions. She has so far achieved 6 AIBA Women’s World Championships gold medals; and her last gold being in 2018 World Championships under 45-48 kg category in New Delhi. Recently, she excelled in the ongoing President’s Cup winning the gold under 51kg category without breaking so much of a sweat against the Australian boxer.
In Labuan Bajo in Indonesia on Sunday, 28th July, Mary Kom braced to yet another gold medal with a dominant portrayal of her boxing skills in the ring, toppling Australian boxer April Franks. Kom stormed into final bout and ceased the gold only two months after winning the gold at India Open. Mary Kom had arrived at the tournament with the only goal of testing her abilities against the World’s best ahead of the World Championships. She had to push a little harder in the previous match against Anh vo Thi kim of Vietnam on 27th of July, but she excelled in the final with flying colors.
In the 23rd President’s Cup, she was not the only Indian woman to win gold, Simranjit Kaur also ceased the gold under 60kg category, as the women put forth a magnificent performance to clench all of the 4 gold medals on offer. Kaur also won her bout in a straight 5-0 win against Hasanah Huswatun of Indonesia. In the 48kg bout, Monika secured gold with a similar performance fighting against Endang of Indonesia. In the entire tournaments, India registered 7 gold and 2 silver medals. Mary Kom will be eagerly looking forward to qualifying in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
