Match 15: Chennai Faces Their First Defeat of the Season

Trying to keep up with the points table of the season, Mumbai Indians needed an exact home win like this. The game started with CSK winning the toss and opting to field first. CSK had a good start when MI scored only 3 runs of their first 2 overs. But at the middle of third over, Mumbai seemed to be struggling a bit losing their first wicket of Quinton de Kock (4 out; 7b; 1X4). Skipper Rohit Sharma (13 out; 18b; 1X4) and Surya Kumar Yadav slowly started to build a partnership for the second wicket, just then, a struggling Sharma was cut short by Ravindra Jadeja at the beginning of 8th over. However, Yadav kept firing shots unable to restore a partnership. But soon, as Krunal Pandya came to bat Mumbai witnessed a partnership that helped them score a victory at the end of the game. Surya Kumar Yadav 59 off 43 balls (8X4; 1X6) and Krunal Pandya  42 off 32 balls (5X4; 1X6) put up quite a show, after Pandya got caught on long-on trying to hit a six after consecutive boundaries at the end of 17th over. Suryakuma concluded his inning within the next 2 overs leaving MI at 125 for 5, at the end of 18 overs. However, Kieron Pollard (17 not out; 7 balls; 2X6) and Hardik Pandya (25 not out; 8 balls; 1X4, 3X6) smacked 45 runs in last 2 overs, with 29 from the last one, settling for a total of 170 with the loss of five wickets at the end of 1st innings.

The 2nd innings started and within 4 balls of start Amabati Rayudu (0 out; 1 ball) was knocked off by Jason Behrendorff. Shane Watson followed suit, concluding his innings to 5 runs, trying to release the building pressure and hitting a boundary over the top of Kieron Pollard and getting caught in the process. Suresh Raina started his scoring with six, but was clearly struggling throughout his batting. However, his struggle did not last long enough, as trying to hit another six, Kieron Pollard took a spectacular catch on the boundary, ending Raina’s journey for the night. While on the other hand, Kedar Jadhav put up a stubborn performance with his 58 runs from 54 balls (8X4, 1X6), inching CSK closer to their target. Captain MS Dhoni came to bat, but his 12 runs of 21 balls were not effective enough. Ravindra Jadeja was also a no show. CSK seemed have lost its hopes when in the start of 18th over Kedar Jadhav departed. Dwayne Bravo and Deepak Chahar both came and went within few balls contributing a six and a boundary respectively. MI’s wicket keeper Quinton put out a splendid performance by taking four commendable catches. Hardik Pandya and Lasith Malinga were successful in taking 3 wickets each. Shardul Thakur concluded with a six and a four to end the innings, and a 37 runs victory was earned by Mumbai.
