Messi-Ibrahimović in a Tussle for ‘Goal of the Year’

FIFA has many accolades in store to offer to the players that has made prominent efforts to lead their respective clubs, respective nations and above all to contribute to the game. One of these honors include, FIFA Puskas Award, which considers the best goal of the year based on several tournaments based in that one-year tenure. 

The award named after Ferenc Puskas, to honor the great striker of Real Madrid, Hungary and Spain in the 1950’s and 1960’s was inaugurated in the 2009. For a decade, many legendary names have made to short-list consisting of 10 players, who were each exceptionally outstanding with their skills to make it to the list. The list for this year was announced by FIFA on Monday, 19th August

Starting from last year 16th July to 19th July 2019, 10 most exceptional goals by players from both the male and the female teams in specific formats and tournaments have been short-listed for the award. The names include, Matheus Cunha, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Lionel Messi, Ajara Nchout, Fabio Quagliarella, Juan Fernando Quintero, Amy Rodriguez, Billie Simpson, Andros, Townsend and Daniel Zsori

Star player of Barcelona, Lionel Messi is yet to win the award for the first time for his fair share of contribution, despite being nominated for the most number of times, to be precise 7 times. The Swedish forward, Zlatan Ibrahimović has previously secured the award in the year 2013 and have been nominated 4 times. Last year Mohammed Salah was crowned with the FIFA Puskas award playing for Liverpool

Nominees have been made from Bundesliga, Spanish Liga, Women’s World Cup to arrive at a definite conclusion with 10 final names at hand. Fans can add their support through voting till 1st September and the governing body of world football will decide along with the votes from people who will be crowned this year’s best goal.  Among the other players nominated for the list, apart from Messi and Ibrahimović others will competing for the very first time for the honor. The winner will be declared on September 23rd at the FIFA Football Awards in Milan.
