Rafael Benitez furious at players after Chelsea ousted of Champions League

Chelsea interim coach Rafael Benitez maintained his composure as he concentrates upon the good prospects after the defending champions were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage itself even after winning against FC Nordsjaelland.

A fluent 6-1 victory in west London on Wednesday ensured Chelsea finish their Group E campaign in a perfect manner, but Juventus' 1-0 victory at Shakhtar Donetsk resulted in the champions completing third in the group and slipped into the Europa League.

After handling the affairs once Roberto Di Matteo has been expelled, Benitez has witnessed Chelsea lose 10 points from the tally in the Premier League, and they now create a sort of record by being the first Champions League holders to be ousted at the first hurdle the concluding season.

The obvious facts reflect a slim situation of the life at Stamford Bridge, but considering the Club World Cup in Japan to observe ahead for the following week, coach Benitez responds that there is no time to ponder over the defeat.

"I'm sure playing at the level we played at today (Wednesday), we can do whatever we want, but we have to start in the next game," he reacted.

"My approach is one game at a time. Everything I'm seeing from the players is good -- they are progressing, improving and adjusting to the little ideas we are trying to change."

When either of the sides had gone through a situation during which penalties were saved, David Luiz offered Chelsea the lead from the penalty spot in the 38th minute prior the increasing of the hosts' advantage in first-half stoppage time by Fernando Torres.

Joshua John featured in the pulling of a goal back in 30 seconds during the second half but no goals from Torres, Gary Cahill, Juan Mata and substitute Oscar handed out Chelsea a one-sided victory.

Fernando Torres had netted just once in his earlier 11 ties and Benitez told his rediscovered scoring spree was a result of the chances created for him.

"Yesterday in training he was sharp and today he was fine, but the team helped because we were playing with intensity right until the end, even when we were 6-1 up," he said.

"If we can play at this level, I think he can score more goals."

Eden Hazard featured in a penalty saved before Luiz scored the first one and when Benitez was questioned why Torres was not given the onus of penalty-taking responsibilities, his reply suggested the Spaniard does not display a cool enough temperament.

"Sometimes you don't need strikers to take penalties," said Benitez.

"If you have other players who have more calmness or composure -- at Liverpool we had (Steven) Gerrard, here we have David and Hazard."

Post jubilation of May's maiden win in the Champions League, Chelsea's fans may witness the Europa League as an unmatchable competition for the European champions, but Benitez stressed to consider it seriously.

"The Europa League is not important if you don't win, but if you are in the semi-finals or the final, you want to win," he said.
