Ronaldo again turns saviour for Portugal as his goal helps dump out spirited Morocco

Thanks to four goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal are in a strong position to go on to the next round just after their two group stage games! Ronaldo’s diving header kept his quest alive for the Golden boot in the tournament. Morocco goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi did not get a chance to stop the bullet header of Ronaldo as it flew past him and nestled into the back of the net.

Morocco had the worst possible start as they conceded an early goal in Luzhniki stadium, which increased Ronaldo’s goal tally to 85th for Portugal, which is the record number of goals for any European player. Nevertheless, going forward from the fourth minute onwards, Morocco were the ones who created better chances and looked like scoring quite a few goals. Rui Patricio made a number of saves and Morocco struggled with their finishing in front of goal; however, better teams would punish Portugal if they get such chances.

Ronaldo himself also spurned a few chances in front of goal and failed to convert from a couple of free-kicks on the edge of the box, while Goncalo Guedes had a chance to score when he was put through by Ronaldo but Guedes shot straight at the keeper to see his shot saved. Just like their Euro 2016 campaign, Portugal managed to grind out another victory to deny Morocco passage to the last 16 stages of this World Cup. Although Ronaldo is having the World Cup as he wants, it remains to be seen how far Portugal will go leaning on his shoulders alone. Portugal was just not dominant enough in their opening two games to suggest otherwise.goal-1 (2)Amrabat was by far the best player of the game as he kept troubling Portugal from the right wing with a lot of trickery and set up a number of chances. Morocco turned out to be the better team for most of the match while Portugal yet again hung on and hoped the best from Ronaldo.goal-2 (2)While Morocco was the better team all evening, the number of chances spurned by them ultimately led to their downfall.
