Sagar Gurve Creates History In Moscow!

Sagar Gurve overcame all odds to script history at Moscow, Russia. Back in 2013, a class XII student Gurve fell from his seat as his heartbeat suddenly slowed down during the board examination. On account of serious health condition, he had to skip the exam. Henceforth, frustration creeped in and to deal with it the 22-year-old decided to keep himself busy by joining the gymnasium.

Sagar created three world records-squats, benchpress, deadlift in the run-up to clinch the gold medal for India in the World Cup, organised by the World Powerlifting Congress, in December. Participating in the 60 kg band of junior (U-23) category, Gurve emerged best among the 42 powerlifters from 40 countries, and carved out a unique distinction for himself after stitching a powerlifting world record in Moscow, Russia. Following him were powerlifters from Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka respectively on the podium.

Maintaining a disciplined fitness regime, Gurve lifted 200 kgs weight in squats, 105 kgs in bench-press and 210 kgs in deadlift to surpass previous world record set by Russian athlete.

Gurve comes from an impoverished background, and had helped his mother sell curd in the morning and vegetables in the evening during his school and college days. The journey of Gurve, son of a chicken shop vendor, is truly awe-inspiring.
