Sindhu And Sameer Bows Out Of All England Championships

Hoping to break the 18 year old jinx at All England Badminton Championships, it was a disappointing start for the Indians as ace shuttler PV Sindhu bowed out in the first round itself. Sindhu, fifth seeded in this tournament, succumbed to 16-21, 22-20, 18-21 defeat at the hands of unseeded Sung Ji Hyun. Sindhu’s hopes were shattered following an hour and 20 minutes of marathon battle.

Sindhu, although in control of the match initially, failed to keep up with the sudden change in the South Korean shuttler’s pace and ended up handing Ji Hyun the first game of the match. Even though Sindhu bounced back in the second game, the world number 10 Ji Hyun didn’t make it easy for the tall Hyderabadi and fought till the end.

Having regained composure and momentum, Sindhu started off well in the deciding game. But, Sung was able to read her opponents move on the court and put up an extraordinary display to outclass Sindhu.

On the other hand, Kidambi Srikanth defeated Brice Leverdez of France 21-13, 21-11 in the men’s singles. However, Sameer Verma lost his tie against Viktor Axelsen of Denmark 21-16, 18-21, 14-21. And in the other women’s singles, Saina Nehwal outplayed her Scottish opponent Kirsty Gilmour 21-17, 21-18.
