Celebrations again! India's Somdev Devvarman crashed into the main draw of the US Open men's singles title after thumping James Ward in the qualifying finals on Friday. Subsequently, Somdev will clash with World No.85 Lukas Lacko of Slovakia in the first round of the year's final Grand Slam on Monday.
Notably, Somdev scored 6-3 3-6 6-4 to win over Ward of Great Britain in a match that continued for 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Amazingly, Somdev converted both his break chances and saved three of his serve to win the first set within 38 minutes. But the 175th-ranked Ward clawed himself back into the match when he broke Somdev twice in the second set. Fortunately, Somdev too had his chances but wasted all four break points he had in the second set. Somdev saved two break points in the fiercely fought decider and capitalized in on two of the three chances to reserve a berth in the main draw.
Somdev wrote on his twitter page post match that he is happy to be through to the main draw and excited for next week.
Remarkably, Somdev reached 2nd rounds of Australian Open as well as French Open in the first three Grand Slams of the season. In contrast, he bowed out in the qualifiers at Wimbledon.
