Former Indian player, Sunil Gavaskar has revealed a surprise candidate for India's reserve opener for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019. Gavaskar has picked Dinesh Karthik ahead of Rishabh Pant in his squad for the upcoming 2019 ICC World Cup in England and Wales.
Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma are arguably the best opening pair in the Limited-overs cricket; a reserve opener is always required in such a big tournament. The team management is low on option due to K.L. Rahul’s poor form in the recent matches.
Sunil Gavaskar, however, feels India should try out Dinesh as the backup opener. Karthik has been tried as floater throughout his career and is being currently tried out as a finisher. However, Kartik did not find a spot in the five match ODI series next month.
On the other hand, Rishab Pant was recalled to ODI squad after missing two consecutive against Australia and New Zealand.
Chairman of selectors, MSK Prasad, on Friday said that they wanted to test Rishab in a few ODIs before taking the final call for the ICC World Cup 2019.
Gavaskar named the 13 players of the squad without mentioning Pant’s name. The names included Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli,Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep.
There should be a flexibility in the team. Dinesh Karthik has opened in Test matches in the past so he can do it in ODIs too.
