It has been reported that Vikas Gowda of India advanced into the men's discus throw final on Monday in the 14th IAAF World Athletics Championships at Moscow after finishing seventh overall in the qualification round.
National record holder as well as reigning Asian champion Gowda finished fourth in Qualification Round A with a best throw of 63.64m, which he accomplished in his first attempt on the 3rd day of the competition at the Luzhniki Stadium.
Previously, Gowda had won the gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships in Pune last month. This was his first in the event and will encounter much tough competition in the final event at Moscow. Notably, reigning World and Olympic champion Robert Harting of Germany was dominating the title who went into the final round with an effort of 66.62m.
Piotr Malachowski of Poland was second in the qualification with 66.00m while London Olympics bronze medalist Gerd Kanter of Estonia stood third with 65.54m. It cannot be ignored that Gowda has a personal best and national record of 66.28m. Subsequently, the 12-athlete final round is scheduled to be held on Tuesday.
Above all, the women's 20 kilometre race walker Khusbir Kaur, who is the first Indian woman to qualify for the event, will also compete on Tuesday.
