Will it be Uruguay or Russia to top the Group A?

It’s time for Russia to face Uruguay at the Samara Arena. Uruguay's two previous encounters with Russia’s predecessor, the Soviet Union, at the FIFA World Cup have been quite dramatic. In 1962 in Chile, a last-minute goal from Valentin Ivanov against the run of play secured victory for the Soviets, but in 1970 the Celeste gained their revenge, with a goal from Victor Esparrago in extra time deciding the quarter-final between the two teams.

Though both the sides have booked their spots for the Round of 16, this match will only decide their placement. The two top-of-the-table participants from Group A are looking forward as to finish as group winners rather than runner-ups which will be a crucial factor in the long run. In order to finish top of the group, Uruguay needs to win the match, but a draw would see Russia finish in first due to their superior goal difference. La Celeste prides themselves on their tactical nous and cohesion from back to front. Their defensive discipline paired with the attacking threat that Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani provide, make Uruguay the trickiest opponent that Russia has faced at the tournament so far. Coach Oscar Tabarez is expected to make changes in midfield and could even alter their tactical system, due to the inclusion of Lucas Torreira.
