Women Receiving their Due Credit from FIFA

It is an open secret, that the world is still plagued with the idea ‘male domination’, while ‘gender equality’ is still far from outturning the ages-old mindset. From household chores, to workplace and an individual’s payrolls, biases like these did not leave the grounds of sports where athletes make their countries prouder than ever. Women had been subject to atrocities and poorer mentality, and they had to fight hard to take back what was only theirs to start with. Women’s game has often fell prey to the same domination, with lesser exposure and coverage, lesser payroll, even lesser opportunities to bag and options to choose from.

FIFA World Cup, which is considered to be one of the most prestigious and engaging sports event of the season like ICC World Cup or Wimbledon, has also been affected by the same criticism. While the FIFA Men World Cup was considering expansion and suitable paychecks for their game, the Women’s World Cup, despite promising show from each team, FIFA failed to provide them the desired honor they evidently deserved.

It was not long, when the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup concluded with the defending champions United States claiming the trophy once more with an apt performance on the field. However, they did make the country proud bringing the trophy home but the payroll yet raised alarming questions. Though FIFA president Gianni Infantino doubled the prize money of the World Cup to 60 million US Dollars for 2023, it was still too little compared to a whopping 440 million US Dollars that has been granted for the next edition of the Men’s World Cup.

This was not the end of it, the Women’s World Cup has been urging for expansion for quite some time now, but the decision was facing some rifts as well. Now for the betterment, in an anonymous approval from FIFA, the Women’s World Cup is set for an expansion with 32 teams participating in its edition, same as the Men’s World Cup have been boasting from decades. FIFA has also opened the bidding process for potential hosts with bids from 9 countries such as, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, New Zealand, Japan and a joint bid from South and North Korea have already been submitted. From 12 teams in 1991 to 24 in last two editions, Women’s World Cup has come a long way but still has to go a long way from shedding all disparities off of its back starting with the normalizing the payroll in recent time.
